WALTER ZAWILINSKI,
93, of Cass City, died following a short illness Sunday, January 26, 2014 in United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center, Marlette. He was born March 2, 1920 in Hamtramck to Joseph and Mary (Philipowicz) Zawilinski. He married Agnes C. Van Erp February 8, 1964 in St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Ubly.
Walter worked various construction jobs before buying the Cass Tavern which he ran with his brother, Martin for over 30 years. After retirement Walter worked in the meat department of Erla's Grocery Store for several years. In his younger years Walter enjoyed boating and fishing with his nieces and nephews. Walter also enjoyed gardening.
Walter is survived by his wife, Agnes; son, Fred (Anna) Zawilinski of Painesville, OH; grandchildren: Megan, Kateri, Sarah; sister-in-law, Marge Zawilinski; Agnes' family: Mary Kubacki of Ubly, Florence (Norman) Briolat of Romeoville, IL, Evelyn Schadd of Filion, Robert (Sue) Van Erp of Bad Axe, William (Kay) Van Erp of Canton Township, Carol Van Erp of Bad Axe. He was Uncle Wally to many nieces and nephews. Walter is preceded in death by siblings: Bruno (Martha) Zawilinski, John Zawilinski, Martin (Virginia) Zawilinski, Frances (Jack) Hrabec; nephews: Jerry Zawilinski, Pete Zawilinski, Philip Zawilinski; Agnes" siblings: Marcella (W.J.) Campbell, Dorothy (Robert) Schmidt, Joseph Van Erp, Albert (RuthAnn) Van Erp, Albert Kubacki, Earl Schadd.
Memorial service held 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2014 in St. Pancratius Catholic Church with Sr. Maria Dina Puddu MC officiating. Interment will take place in Elkland Township Cemetery in the spring. Memorials may be made to United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center or St. Pancratius Catholic Church.
