John Zawilinski

April 16, 1918 — January 11, 2009

John Zawilinski, 90, of Cass City, died Sunday, January 11, 2009 in Hills & Dales General Hospital. He was born April 16, 1918 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Joseph and Marie (Philopovitch) Zawilinski. He married Mary Marjorie Peters June 5, 1943 in St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Freiburg.

John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning from the service, he worked for a foundry in Detroit before returning to Cass City to work in the Cass City Nestles plant. After the Cass City plant closed he worked at the Ubly Nestle plant. He retired from General Cable as a lead man after 11 years. John was a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church and the Cass City Gagetown Knights of Columbus #8892. He was also a life member of Cass City VFW Post #3644 and DAV. In his younger years John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Marge enjoyed taking rides in the car. John loved to work around the house. He was a fixer upper and if anyone in the family had something that needed fixing, Dad was who they would call.

Left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife, Marge; children: Joann (Jim) Smithson of Cass City, Alan (Melojean) Zawilinski of Bay City, John (Angie Schatzer) Zawilinski of Bay City, Linda Salas of Cass City, Richard Zawilinski of Benwick, LA; grandchildren: Jim Smithson, Julie (Barry) Patterson, Jeffery (Jackie) Smithson, Justin Salas, Brent Salas, Lyle Schatzer, Lance Schatzer, Rush (Ryan) Warren, Knop Carrillo, Karla Carrillo; great grandchildren: Rob, Megan, Kelsey, Ava, Gloriel, Kaleb; sister, Frances Hrabec of Cass City, Walter (Aggie) Zawilinski of Cass City; sister-in-law, Virginia Zawilinski of Caro; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Jerry Michael Zawilinski; brothers: Bruno (Martha) Zawilinski and Martin Zawilinski.

Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2009 in St. Pancratius Catholic Church with Rev. Stephen J. Fillion officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in Elkland Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Zawilinski are his grandsons: Jim Smithson, Jeff Smithson, Justin Salas, Brent Salas, Lyle Schatzer, Lance Schatzer.
