GLADYS LUCILLE VAN HORN,
90, of Deford, died following a long illness, Monday, January 14, 2013 in Tuscola County Medical Care Facility, Caro. She was born April 6, 1922 on the family farm in Elk Township, Sanilac County to William Wallace and Ada Dorcas (Orchard) Balhoff. She married Theodore R. Van Horn August 19, 1944 in Elk Township, Sanilac County. He died September 5, 2000.
Gladys was a Certified Nurse's Assistant. She worked for Chrysler and for Mueller Brass in Port Huron. She was a life member and Treasurer of Caro Free Methodist Church for many years and a former Kingston PTA member. Gladys attended Kingston Wesleyan Church. She volunteered collecting money for the Cancer drive and for the community calendars. Gladys also volunteered at Deford Christian Academy. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cross stitch and reading. Gladys was a dedicated housewife, an excellent seamstress and cook. She fixed many wonderful meals and made clothes for all her family. Gladys and Theodore traveled throughout the United States including: Washington, Texas, Arizona, Florida and Washington D.C. Gladys loved spending time with her family.
Gladys is survived by her children: Ray (Patti) Van Horn of Tawas City, Edward Van Horn of Port St. Lucie, FL, Kathryn (Dave) Wice of Reese, Paul Van Horn of Deford; daughter-in-law, Karen Van Horn of Spring Arbor; grandchildren: Eric (Rebecca) Van Horn, Kevin (Kathy) Van Horn, Laura (Nathaniel) Andrus, Angela (John) McLaughlin, Tyler Wice, Andrew Wice, Candice (George) Gentges, George Van Horn, Brent Van Horn, Kyle Van Horn, Aaron Van Horn: great grandchildren: Alisha, Abigail, Mia, Emma, Ella, Elise, Jacob, Caleb, Michael, Jared, Shea and Nolan; sisters-in-law: Gloria Balhoff, Geraldine (Howard) Conely; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son, Dean Van Horn; daughter-in-law, Debora Van Horn; brothers: Russell Balhoff, Warren Balhoff, Walter Balhoff; sisters: Edith Banks, Viona Sawdon.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 in Kingston Wesleyan Church with Rev. Len Wyatt officiating. Interment will be in Kingston Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mrs. Van Horn are her grandsons: Eric, Kevin, Tyler, Andrew, Brent, Kyle, Aaron. Memorials may be made to Kingston Wesleyan Church.
