Robert G. Umbreit, 86, of Cass City, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 27, 2005 in a house fire in his daughter’s home. He was born August 29, 1918 in Detroit to Arthur and Gertrude (Mortensen) Umbreit. He married Mary Stacy May 7, 1943 in Harrisburg, PA. She died October 31, 2001.
As a young man Robert received an invitation to try out with the Detroit Tigers. He farmed with his parents before serving in the US Army. He served as a motorcycle courier in France during WWII. Robert worked at the Clippert Brickyard in Detroit with his father and two brothers. He retired from Port Huron Hospital as Head of Maintenance after 25 years. After his retirement, Bob worked maintenance for the Village of Forestville. He was the manager of the Forestville Softball team for 20 years and was a member of the Harmony Society. Bob liked to hunt and fish. He was well known for his baked beans.
Robert is survived by his children: Ronnie Umbreit of Forestville, Robert Umbreit of Saline, Tammy (Ronald) Cleland of Saline; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; brothers: Donald (Beatrice) Umbreit of Minden City, Ralph (Buster) (Kathy) Umbreit of Minden City; sister, Dorothy Oliphant of Cass City; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Janie Clink; grandson, Hugh Clink; brother, Arthur Umbreit; sister, Arlo Prieskorn and his daughter, Beth Ann Gaszczynski who died in the fire with Robert.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Monday January 31, 2005 at Novesta Church of Christ with Chuck Emmert officiating. Memorials donations may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Pallbearers: Aaron, Eric, Roy, Robert, Justan, and Shane Umbreit, Jesse and Michael Clink, and Jason Cortez.
