THOMAS ANTHONY “POPS” STIMPFEL
77, of Cass City died peacefully Monday, September 12, 2022 in his home with a beautiful view of his pond. He always enjoyed being near the water. Tom was born December 5, 1944 in Delaware Township, Sanilac County to Arnold C. and Delores (Sadro) Stimpfel. He married Doris Theresa Peplinski on August 3, 1964 in Newport, R.I. She was his loving wife of fifty-eight years, which felt like fifty-nine years according to Pops.
Tom graduated from St. Peter and Paul High School, Ruth, in 1962. In July of the same year, he entered boot camp and served four years with the United States Navy aboard the USS Grand Canyon (AD-28). Following his military service, Tom worked for General Cable and then Active Homes, where he learned his trade as a drywaller. He then worked for Graham Smith Drywall - Lath & Plaster of Brown City for several years, before starting his own business, Tom’s Drywall, in 1984. He had worked forty-five years in drywall before being forced to retire, due to health reasons, in 2016. His son, Jim, continues the quality work of Tom’s Drywall.
Outside of work, Tom was a lifelong member and served as a board member of the Cass City Gun Club where he excelled at competitive trap and skeet. He was a member of the NRA, Caseville Eagles, Caro Moose Lodge, and Ubly Fox Hunters and also frequented the White Creek Club for poker games. He also enjoyed bonfires, camping and spending time outdoors. When indoors, one of his favorite hobbies was playing cards. Tom was also a member of Novesta Church of Christ.
Tom is survived by his wife, Doris; children: Tammie Stimpfel of Bay City; Renae (Todd) Sweaney of New River, AZ; Thomas C. (Sloane) Stimpfel of Deford; James E. (Teri) Stimpfel of Cass City; grandchildren: “Bash”, Tristan, and Kyran Robb; Bransen and CarLee Stimpfel; Kate, Kenneth, and Kristin Stimpfel; three step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Kolomak of Minden City; brother-in-law, John Terbrack of South Gate; and many other beloved in-laws, out-laws, nieces, nephews, and good friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna Terbrack; brother, Charles Stimpfel; and brother-in-law, Gary Kolomak.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, September 21, 2022 in Novesta Church of Christ from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. with Brad Speirs officiating. Military honors conducted under direction of the Cass City V.F.W. Post #3644. Interment will be in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly at a later date.
