VELMA MAY STEVENSON
Velma M. Stevenson, 92, of South Lyon, died Saturday, March 1, 2008 with her family at her side in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti, following a short illness. She was born March 8, 1915 in Superior, NB to Perry and Freida (Lessmeier) McDaniel. She married Clarence Thomas Stevenson November 9, 1932 in Belleville, KS. He died January 2, 2000 after 67 years of marriage.
Velma and Tom moved to South Lyon in 1937. They built and raised their family in a home on 12 Mile Road. Velma worked hard cooking, baking and caring for her family. She loved her husband and her family and made each feel as if they were her favorite. She loved gardening especially working in her flower gardens. Velma enjoyed many things throughout her life including playing games with family and friends such as pinochile and euchre. She spent countless hours enriching her grandchildrens lives by preparing wonderful meals, coloring and hiding Easter eggs, making Halloween treat bags for each, coloring with them, reading to them and making each feel special. Velma worked for General Filters Co. in Novi for 11 years to help pay the expenses of her youngest daughters college education. She was very diligent about sending cards for each holiday to all the family and friends on her list. Velma faithfully attended New Hudson United Methodist Church as long as she was able.
Left to remember and cherish Velmas memory are her children: Mary Ann Gaffka of Wixom, Vera Mae Hock of Kingston, Ellen Joyce (Chuck) Maltese of Gold River, CA; grandchildren: Michael Gaffka of Baton Rouge, LA; Patrick (Anne) Gaffka of Livonia, Debra (Jim) Kranz of Cass City, Wendy (Roland) Haley of Athens, TN, Lisa Nelson of Cadillac, Timothy (Julie) Maltese of White Lake, Mark (Julie) Maltese of Carol Stream, IL; great grandchildren: Chris (Ian) Boykin, Mitchell Gaffka, Shenandoah Gaffka, John Gaffka, Emily Gaffka, Sarah Gaffka, Angela (Stuart) Ridpath, Adam Kranz, Lydia Haley, Audrey Haley, Melissa Haley, Kathryn Haley, Brandon Nelson, Douglas Maltese, Nicholas Maltese, Andrew Maltese and Alex Maltese; great great grandchildren: Cheyanne Gaffka, Grace Ridpath; half-brother, Warner McDaniel of Council Bluffs, IA; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son-in-law, Anthony Gaffka; great grandchild, Jamie Haley; brother, Albert McDaniel; sister, Anna Messersmith; half-sister, Evelyn Hadden; half-brother, Oscar McDaniel.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 in New Hudson United Methodist Church with Rev. Gerald Hunter officiating. Velma will be buried next to her husband in South Lyon Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mrs. Stevenson are her grandchildren: Mike, Pat, Debbie, Wendy, Lisa, Tim and Mark. Memorials may be made to New Hudson United Methodist Church or South Lyon Center for Active Adults.
