MAXINE VICTORIA SMITH,
81, of Caseville and Clearwater Beach, FL, formerly of Cass City, died following a short illness Thursday, February 11, 2016 in her home. She was born October 20, 1934 in Gagetown the youngest of seven children born to Robert and Mildred (Patnude) Kappen. She married Jay Lee Smith July 23, 1955 in Detroit.
Maxine and Jay owned and operated Jack's Bar, Oasis Tavern, Wildwood Farm and Maple Lane Motel. She loved to play Bridge with her lady friends in Clearwater Beach and Caseville and has played for over 35 years. Maxine was a great cook and set a beautiful table with everything in its place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. She loved to play cards with her children and grandchildren. Dinners with family were a highlight of her life. Maxine was a classy woman who loved life and loved to laugh.
Maxine is survived by her husband, Jay; children: David (Marti) Smith of Inverness, FL, Kimburley (Terry) Donovan of Cass City, Kelly (Kelly) Smith of Cass City, Kevin Smith of Cass City; grandchildren: Joey (Chad) Kreeger of Cass City, Rebecca (Ryan) Cumper of Cass City, Christopher (Amanda) Smutek of Bay City, Alexandria Smith of Ann Arbor, Nicholas Smith of Cass City, Josette (Kathy) Costa of Clearwater Beach, FL, Jason Smith of Clearwater Beach, FL; great grandchildren: Zachary (Chelsi), Garrett, Connor, Victoria, Taylor, Madison, Tyler, Clayton, Carter; her first great great grandson, Liam is due in March. She is also survived by sister, Vivian Rabideau of Cass City; brother, Jack (Iris) Kappen of Cass City; sisters-in-law: Shirley Kappen of Cass City, Maxine Loren of Dunedin, FL; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by stepson, Jay Lee Smith, Jr.; brothers: Lester (Jenny) Kappen, Warren Kappen, Wallace Kappen; sister, Marjorie McGill; brother-in-law, Robert Rabideau.
Memorial service held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2016 in Our Lady Consolata Parish, St. Pancratius Catholic Church Cass City with Rev. Robert Kelm officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Family Discretionary Fund.
