LAYTON WALTER SMITH
Layton W. Smith, 90, of Imlay City, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 in Brian’s House in Davison. He was born September 5, 1918 in Goodland Township to Frank C. and Blanche T. (Terpenning) Smith. He married Lena K. Welch January 18, 1941 in Pontiac. She died February 16, 2009.
Layton served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France and Germany. He received a battlefield commission to Second Lieutenant. Layton was awarded a Silver Star and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the Bricklayers Union for over 50 years. He built and sold many houses throughout the years. Layton was a member of North Goodland Baptist Church in Imlay City and longtime member of First Baptist Church in Pontiac.
Layton is survived by his daughters: Sharon (Lyle) Howard of Oxford, Marlene (Daryl) Brezee of Metamora; grandchildren: Heidi Wyke, Shane (Delphine) Brezee, Michelle (Marty) Pietras, Daryl (Christina) Brezee; great grandchildren: Brandon, Levi, Seth, Becca, Scott, John and Selah Joy; sister, Geraldine Madson of Sebring, FL; many nieces and nephews; special caregiver, Sherri Domzalski of Imlay City. He is preceded in death by his sisters: Thelma Metro, Ora Brown; brother, Leland Smith.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009 in North Goodland Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Blount officiating. Interment will be in Goodland Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Smith: Brandon Wyke, Levi Brezee, Seth Brezee, Scott Pietras, John Pietras, Shane Brezee. Memorials may be made to North Goodland Baptist Church.
