LARRY STEVEN SMITH,
66, of Cass City, died following a courageous struggle with cancer and many complications, Thursday, November 14, 2013 in Hills and Dales General Hospital. He was born December 11, 1946 in Marshfield, MO to Mary Frances Atkinson. He married Cathy Ann Ryland March 31, 1968 in Cass City.
Larry was raised by Fran and the best step father anyone could ask for, Harley Nichols. Larry was part of the Cole Carbide Industries family for 45 years. He enjoyed drag racing in Ubly for many years, racing mostly Chevys that he built himself. He was very good with his hands, always tinkering and fixing things. Larry enjoyed hunting, especially black bear and deer. He loved his pets deeply and for always. He made them each headstones for his little pet cemetery. Pickaloiski, his big yellow and white cat, who was with him every step of his illness, misses him terribly. Larry loved his blonde lab, Mandy and was devastated when he found out she had died during one of his times in the hospital. Larry was a kind, loving person, a dedicated friend and the best Grampee.
Larry is survived by his wife, Cathy; daughter, Michele (Nick) Pohlod of Cass City; granddaughter, Kelsey Pohlod (Jacob Verbeek) of Cass City; his family of best friends: Scott Kelley, Rick Bergeron, Dave Guilds, Ken Pasanski, Gary Dean and the memory of Tom Dewey. He was preceded in death by his parents; Fran and Harley Nichols; father-in-law, Bob Ryland; mother-in-law, Betty McCoon; brother-in-law, Craig Ryland.
