J Smith

J.E. SMITH,
age 96, of Cass City died Saturday, February 25, 2012 in his home with his dear family by his side. J was born July 7, 1915 in Brown City, the only child of George W. and Edith A. (Robinson) Smith. He married Mildred “Millie” G. Gleasure October 8, 1938 in Decker and thus began their life adventure. She died January 21, 2004.

J graduated from Pontiac Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army for 35 months mostly in Germany. He worked for the U.S. Post Office before and after his stint in the military. He retired in 1975 after 39 years. J enjoyed playing hockey and played on the Spitfires, a team in the Ontario Hockey Association, for 16 years, until he was 37. After retirement, J and Millie moved to Cass City. J enjoyed fishing and hunting and Millie supported and encouraged his love of hunting. They enjoyed time at their cabin in Atlanta where J hunted bear. He hunted in many states in the US and every province in Canada except Prince Edward Island. J and Millie loved to travel and visited all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii. They also visited many places in Europe. Along with hunting and fishing , J enjoyed golfing and taking cruises with his beloved Millie. J was a charter member of Cass City VFW Post #3644 and a member of Cass City United Methodist Church.

J is survived by his nephew and his wife, Raymond and Ruth Gleasure of Brown City; niece and her husband, Carol and Lloyd North and family of Albuquerque, NM; great nieces and nephews: Dianne (Tom) Verran, Daniel Gleasure, Donald (Laura) Gleasure, Dennis (Debbie) Gleasure, Deborah Gleasure, Dawn Libby, Darrell Gleasure. He is preceded in death by his wife in 2004 and his son, Robert in 2009.

Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Rev. Jackie Roe of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Perry Mount Park Cemetery, Pontiac. Memorials may be made to Cass City United Methodist Church.
