Velda L. Simmons, 88, of Kingston, died Monday, November 15, 2010 in Marlette Regional Hospital following a long illness. He was born June 25, 1922 in Clifford to John and Hazel (Roach) Simmons. He married Evelyn Amelia Whittaker December 5, 1942 in Pontiac. She died February 25, 1998.
Velda worked as a Buttermaker for Riley’s Creamery in Marlette for 21 years. He later spent 16 years working for Wesley’s Creamery in Cass City. During his employment at the Creamery he also did tree trimming for Ralph Whittaker and was a part time farmer. Velda was a member of the Kingston Wesleyan Church. In his spare time, Velda was a golfer or as he called it, a “goofer”. Besides golfing, Velda enjoyed making latch hook rugs and singing in church.
Velda is survived by his children: Marilyn Simmons of Kingston, Janice Simmons of Kingston, Gary (Shirley) Simmons of South Bend, IN, Norma (Joseph) Pinon of Royal Oak, Arlene (Steven) Kirkman of Royal Oak; grandchildren: Nikki (Tom) Pryor, Gail Simmons, Karla Pinon, Tim (Nina) Kirkman, Dan Kirkman, Becky (Matt) Dannenberg; brother, Alvin (Margaret) Simmons of Royal Oak; sister-in-law, Peggy Simmons of Caro; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers: William Simmons, Orlie Simmons.
Funeral service held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010 in Kingston Wesleyan Church with Pastor Len Wyatt officiating. Interment will be in Kingston Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Simmons: Dan Kirkman, Tim Kirkman, Steve Kirkman, Joe Pinon, Richard D’Arcy, Gary Simmons. Memorials may be made to Kingston Wesleyan Church or Gideons International.
