PHYLLIS M. SILVERNAIL

Phyllis M. Silvernail, 76, of Kingston, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 in the United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center following a long battle with cancer. She was born March 5, 1932 in Monroe to Cletus and Edna (Wolf) Parker. She married Carl G. Silvernail June 19, 1954 in Bay City.

Phyllis graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1950 as co-valedictorian of her class. She received her BA in Education from North Central College in Illinois. Phyllis worked as an elementary school teacher for 25 years in Naperville, IL, Lake Odessa and Kingston from which she retired. Phyllis and Carl traveled to Brazil twice staying over three years each time after Carl was appointed by the former EUB Church in May of 1957 as an Agricultural Missionary working on rural community development in the interior. This mission group was the first to raise cash crops in the Serrado. After returning to the US they moved to Kingston in 1967 where she began teaching elementary school. Phyllis was very active with the Tuscola County Community Mental Health Department for over 19 years serving as their chairperson for a time. She was the Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach for Kingston Community Schools for three years. She was voted 2nd runner up for Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1978. Carl and Phyllis began the Silvernail Tree Farm in 1987. Phyllis was a very involved member of Kingston United Methodist Church serving as its Junior Choir Director for many years and Missions Society Director among other positions.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Carl; children: Scott Silvernail of Kingston, Sheri (John) Carter of South Lyon, Jaime (Jenni) Silvernail of Fremont; grandchildren: Chelsea Carter, Tom McLeod, Steven Carter, Cari McLeod, Ryan Silvernail, Tyler Silvernail, Samantha Crosley, Cameron Crosley, Michael Silvernail. She is preceded in death by two infant children; an infant brother and a sister, Audrey Flachsmann.

Funeral service held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Kingston United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in Grant Township Cemetery, Gagetown. Memorials may be made to Kingston United Methodist Church or United Hospice of Marlette.
