Donald J. Shimer, 86, of Deford, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 in his niece’s home. He was born October 8, 1922 in Eckhart, MD to Clevland and Mary (Skelly) Shimer.
Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a sanitation worker for Detroit working in Redford for many years until his retirement. Don loved playing baseball with his brother when he was young. They both had the opportunity to try out with the Baltimore Orioles. He loved gardening, feeding and watching birds and playing games, including card games and Yahtzee. Don also enjoyed cooking.
Don is survived by his nieces: Carol Shimer of Deford, Janet Shimer of Warren; great nieces and nephews: Richard (Stacy) Shimer, Keith (Lynn) Shimer, Tammy (Michael) Caporuscio, Donald (Mindy) Shimer, Marlene (Dwight) Wenta, Gary (Pam) Shimer, David Shimer; many great great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers: Roy J. Shimer and Ed Shimer; nephews: Roy L. Shimer and Gary Shimer.
Funeral service held 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Rev. Dorothy Thon of Mayville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Novesta Township Cemetery. Military honors under the direction of Cass City VFW Post #3644. Memorials may be made to Cass City VFW Post #3644.
