GEORGE DONALD SCHWARTZ,
79, of Gagetown, died following a short illness Monday, May 19, 2014 in Courtney Manor Nursing Facility, Bad Axe. He was born March 9, 1935 at home in Grant Township to Frank and Josephine (Lenda) Schwartz, Sr.. He married Cynthia A. Thiel June 2, 1956 in St. Gertrude Catholic Church, St. Clair Shores. She died July 17, 2001.
George received his GED from Owen-Gage High School. He served in the U.S. Army as peacekeeping and recovery following World War II in Germany during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of St. Agatha Catholic Church and a member of the Cass City Gagetown Knights of Columbus Council #8892. George was very proud of his country and was a very active member of Cass City VFW Post #3644. He was a volunteer with the American Red Cross working many blood draws. He enjoyed hunting and working on his property, landscaping, and caring for his yard and fruit trees.
George is survived by his children: Ronald (Jean) Schwartz of Pontiac, Mark (Shelley) Schwartz of Clio, Robin (Anita) Schwartz of Boise, ID, Cynthia (Rich) Cumper of Deford, Susan (Jack) Lawford of Boise, ID; grandchildren: Victoria (Zach) Prettyman, Rebecca Schwartz, Travis (Olivia) Adsitt, Katie Sue Lawford, Jack Lawford, William Cumper: great grandsons, Alex & Issac; sisters: Eleanor Glaza of Melvin, Gertrude Peruski of Ubly, Patricia Gracey of Houston, TX; sisters-in-law, Iverna Schwartz of Gagetown and Margie Schwartz Muegge of Cass City; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by sons: George Donald Schwartz, Jr. and Donald George Schwartz. Also preceded in death by brothers: Frank Schwartz, Rich (Mary) Schwartz, John Schwartz, Edward "Bud" Schwartz; brothers-in-law: Roman Glaza, Melvin Peruski.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014 in St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown with Rev. Craig Carolan and Sr. Dorothy Ann Blasko, officiating. Interment will be in St. Agatha Cemetery. Military honors under the direction of U.S. Army and Cass City VFW Post#3644. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute.
