Ernest "Gil" Schwaderer, 84, of Cass City died following a long illness Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center, Marlette. He was born December 31, 1931 in Cass City the youngest of three children born to Ernest L. and Thelma (Nettleton) Schwaderer. He married Constance Louise Bartle April 8, 1978 in Cass City.
Gil graduated from Cass City High School in 1950, from the University of Michigan in 1959, and from Michigan State University in 1957 and 1968, completing both his Bachelor and Masters degree studying English and Journalism. After high school Gil took a year and traveled with Tom Schwaderer all over Europe. He served in the U.S. Army from February 1953 to December 1955, including 14 months in Alaska. Gil enjoyed traveling. He and Connie shared many trips throughout the U.S. and Canada beginning with their honeymoon trip to London and Scotland. Gil taught high school English and Journalism from 1959 through 1990 at Bad Axe High School and at Alpena High School. Gil played football and basketball while in high school and his love of sports continued. He enjoyed watching college and professional sports on television, especially basketball. Gil loved to read, especially mysteries. He always wanted to write a book of his own. Gil served on the Historical Society Board and was always willing to help Katie Jackson with whatever project she had for him. He was appointed to the Rawson Memorial Library Board. Gil attended Cass City United Methodist Church with Connie.
Gil is survived by his wife, Connie; stepchildren: Cynthia (Robert) Beauchamp of Bay City, Craig (Donna) Langmaid of Bridgeport; step grandchildren: Autumn Langmaid, CJ Langmaid, Adam (Amanda Jones) Lalko, Russell (Janet) Lalko, Erica Langmaid, Andrea (Nick) Davis; great grandchildren: Kaelean, Zaedin, Ella Grace, Christopher, Elizabeth, Corbin, Jasmine, Madison; sister, June (Lorn) Hillaker of Cass City; sister-in-law, Kathleen (Roy) Tuckey; nephews: Gil (Elizabeth) Wood, Alec (Sarah) Wood, Joe (Becky) Hillaker, Dave (Cheryl) Hillaker, Clark Hillaker; nieces: Megan Wood, Elizabeth (Joe) Mark; many cousins. Gil is preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Laurence and Helen Bartle; sister, Alice Wood; brother-in-law, Kenneth Wood; stepson, Christopher Langmaid; stepgrandson, David.
Memorial service held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 in Cass City United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City.
