Jerome �"Jerry Root, Jr., 82 of Cass City, died Saturday, December 31, 2005 in Northwood Meadows, Cass City. He was born May 9, 1923 in Cass City to Jerome and Margaret (Szabo) Root, Sr. He married Grace Myrtle Galbraith April 15, 1945 in her parents home in Comins. She died March 24, 1983. He then married Normaleen Jean McIntosh August 31, 1985 in Shabbona United Methodist Church.
Jerry played high school football and track. He served in the US Army during World War II. He was a self-employed carpenter with Root Building for many years. Jerry also worked as a carpenter for Patell Construction, RC Hendricks and for Tom Herron. He was a former member of the Cass City Tyler Masonic Lodge #317 and a former member of the Cass City Chamber of Commerce. Jerry started with the Cass City Fire Department in 1958 and served until 1989. During that time he served as Chief from 1969 until 1971. In 1982 he was appointed by the township board as the first fulltime paid village Fire Department Chief. Jerry was one of the original members of the Cass City Investment Club, a former member of the Cass City United Methodist Church and a member of the Shabbona United Methodist Church.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Normaleen; children: Carol (Larry) Summers of Gagetown, Shirley (Bob) McIntosh of Cass City, Jim (Kelly) Root of Cass City; step-son, Dale (Lynda) McIntosh of Cass City; grandchildren: Tom (Melinda) Summers, Terri (Wade) Stilwell, Debbie (Craig) Abell, Tiffany Root, Cassie Root, Alex Magiera, Aaron Magiera, Bryce McIntosh, Shannon (Dieter) Roth; great grandchildren: Kendall Stilwell, Justin Summers, Zachary Abell, Shelby Abell, Summer McIntosh, Matthew Roth, Paige Roth; brothers: Dick (Glenola) Root of Cass City, Don (Helen) Root of Cass City; sister, Doris (Mike) Barto of Cleveland, OH; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Elmer Root, and sisters: Marge Blakely and Elaine Molnar.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2006 in Shabbona United Methodist Church with Rev Ellen Burns officiating. Internment is in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bay Shore Camp, Cass City Fire Department, or American Cancer Society. Military honors under the direction of Cass City VFW Post #3644.
