Emil J. Richter, 87, of Kingston, died unexpectedly, Sunday, August 24, 2008 in his home. He was born May 20, 1921 at home in Evergreen Township to Jacob and Amelia (Markgraf) Richter. He married Velna Aileen Hackel January 23, 1954 in the Pastors home in Monroe, Michigan.
Emil served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines during World War II. Emil was a farmer throughout his life raising beef cattle and crop farming. He also worked for the former Eaton Foundry now Grady Foundry in Vassar for ten winters. Emil enjoyed ice fishing, pheasant hunting (when there were more pheasants) and deer hunting. He truly enjoyed his friends and having coffee at the coffee shop to discuss the daily events.
Emil is survived by his wife, Velna; children: Cheryl (Les) Shaw of Decker, Karl (Pam) Richter of Chesapeake, VA, Kevin Richter of Kingston, Keith (Angie Henry) Richter of Kingston; grandchildren: Matthew Shaw, Jason Shaw, Alisha (Adam) Rocks, Robert Richter, Aaron Richter; sister, Annabelle Harvey of Dearborn; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers: Clarence Richter and John Richter.
Memorial service held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in Kingston Elementary School Cafeteria with Pastor Pat Robbins, Sutton Sunshine United Methodist Church officiating. According to Emil's wishes, his cremated remains will be scattered on the farm he loved and spent so much time caring for. Memorials may be made to Kingston Community Schools Scholarship Fund. A gathering for friends and family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Kingston Elementary School Cafeteria with a light luncheon served before the service for all who attend.
