James M. Phillips, 90, of Cass City, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015 in Tendercare Nursing Facility. He was born March 4, 1924 in Harriman, TN to Martin and Amanda (Morgan) Phillips. He married Lavonia "Bonnie" Morris September 27, 1941 in Rome, GA. She died January 13, 2013.
James and Bonnie moved to Michigan after he returned from serving in the military during World War II. They found jobs and settled in Rochester. Jim worked for Rochester Paper Company retiring after 38 years of service. He was a former Elks Club member. Jim enjoyed golfing and shuffleboard. He loved working in his gardens. Jim was a member of First Baptist Church of Cass City. At one time Jim and Bonnie enjoyed bowling and were members of bowling leagues in the Rochester area.
James is survived by his children: James Christopher Phillips of Troy, Lyn (Don) Moonen of Rochester Hills, Martin Stephen (Alixann) Phillips of Franklin, Ohio; grandchildren: Kenneth Scott (Donna) Richardson II, Jaime (John) Martin, Aimee (Vance) Reisig, Marty Phillips, Amanda Phillips, Jordan Phillips, Shelby Phillips, Kate Phillips, Jenna Phillips, Jocelyn Reardon, Ian Reardon; great grandchildren: Lauren, Elizabeth and Ava; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by brothers: John Phillips, Albert Phillips, Glen Phillips; sister, Carrie Brown; daughter-in-law, Jeannine Phillips.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 in First Baptist Church of Cass City with Rev. David Hill officiating. Interment will be in Mount Avon Cemetery, Rochester, Monday, January 26 at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Cass City.
