HELEN MARIE NELSON,
85, of Cass City, died peacefully Tuesday, March 12, 2019 in Autumnwood of Deckerville. She was born February 11, 1934 in LaGrange, GA, one of ten children born to William Caler and Bertha Pearl (Pike) East. She married James DeGuzman May 14, 1960 in Iron River. He died March 15, 2010. Helen married David Nelson February 9, 2013 in Living Word Worship Center, Cass City. He died February 18, 2019.
As a child in Alabama Helen’s family were cotton share croppers, where she earned two cents per pound. Helen lived in Iron River for over 50 years before moving to Cass City in 2011. She was a pastor at The Gospel Chapel where her husband was co-pastor. Helen hosted a weekly gospel radio show called “The Gospel Truth” where she shared music and gospel for 26 years. She loved to bowl and participated in leagues in the Upper Peninsula. She enjoyed traveling to special locations such as Niagara Falls and Dollywood and enjoyed her time with Brenda on their cruise.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Mike) Reeder of Cass City and their children, Mikayla Reeder and Aurora Reeder; grandaughter, Shayna Ward of ND; sister, Clois Lavine Reaves of Albertville, AL; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers: William East, Johnny East; sisters: Velma Townsel, Marjorie “Polly” Longhi, Reba Morgan, Alma Russell, Katherine Benefield, and infant sister, Mary Ruth East.
Funeral service held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2019 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Pastor Jep Bryant of Living Word Worship Center of Cass City officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in Rest Haven Cemetery, Iron River. Memorials may be made to Family Discretionary Fund.
