MORRIS WILLIAM MARTIN
Morris W. Martin, 74, of Vassar, died Saturday, January 3, 2009 in Covenant Health Care System, Harrison Campus, Saginaw. He was born March 8, 1934 at home on the farm in Vassar to William and Delores ( ) Martin. He married Kathleen Marie DeLisle February 13, 1960 in Vassar.
Morris worked as a heavy equipment operator for Great Lakes Foundry following in the footsteps of his Dad and two uncles, retiring after over 35 years. As a youngster, he helped his dad shovel coal on the big steam locomotives that came to the foundry. He also farmed most of his working years. Morris was a member of the Teamsters Union. Morris enjoyed working in his shed on wood projects or tearing apart a lawnmower. He enjoyed watching old shows on television like Hee Haw or Lawrence Welk. He liked Alan Jackson and on a recent trip to Tennessee he got to see his home. Morris never fished or hunted but enjoyed spending time with his father-in-law, Bernard DeLisle, netting the big salmon Dad caught. He was very much a family man and loved his grandkids or “Poochies” as he called them.
Morris is survived by his wife, Kathleen; sons: Timmy (Alice) Martin of Caro, Paul (Marie) Martin of Vassar, Aaron (Vickie) Martin of Clifford, Matthew (Gert) Martin of Harrison; grandchildren: Joshua, Joseph and Jacob Martin; step-grandchildren: David (Jennifer), Daniel (Selina), Aaron (Amy), Tammy (Jesse), Debbie (Chris), Betty (Jason); several step-great grandchildren; sisters: Rosie Putman of Vassar, Isabelle Lawrence of Mt. Morris, Julius (Laberta) Martin of Mt. Morris, Emma Jean Hill of Caro, Eddie Martin of Vassar, Wesley (Wanda) Martin of Vassar, Margie (Roland) Foster of Vassar, Mary (Roger) Starking of Lapeer, Jerry (Donald) Springsteen of Davison; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Albert Martin and Lawrence Martin; sister, Ella Mae Devers.
Funeral service held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in Kranz Funeral Home Kingston with Pastor Len Wyatt of Kingston Wesleyan Church officiating. Interment will be in Kingston Cemetery, Kingston. Pallbearers for Mr. Martin are: Joshua Martin, Joseph Martin, Jacob Martin, Bud DeLisle, Alvin DeLisle, and Jay DeLisle.
