NELLE CARY WELSH KOEPFGEN MAHARG,
83, of Cass City, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2009 unexpectedly in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Saginaw. She was born February 21, 1926 in Grayling to Fred and Jane (Secor) Welsh. She married Donald E. Koepfgen November 4, 1950 in Grayling. He passed away June 19, 1973. Nelle married Kenneth Carl Maharg October 4, 1975 in Marlette. He passed away May 1, 1995.
Nelle graduated from Grayling High School in 1944. She was Senior Class President and Outstanding Senior of the Year. Nelle loved and appreciated music and the arts and passed that love and appreciation onto her children. She played piano, accordion and she played drums in the Stardusters, a high school combo band that played in the Grayling area. After high school Nelle graduated from Harper Hospital’s School of Nursing in Detroit in 1947 as a Registered Nurse. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the former Cass City Hospital and Hills & Dales General Hospital. She worked for many years as the Cass City Community School Nurse. After her retirement from the school system, Nelle assisted with special care at Hills & Dales General Hospital.
Nelle was a former Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Cass City Lioness Club, one of the first Presidents of the Traveling Ladies Golf League of Rolling Hills Golf Course, and was a member of a regular golf league of Rolling Hills Golf Course, and several bowling leagues over the years. She had a competitive spirit. Nelle played Bridge with a local Bridge group for many years. She was a member of Fraser Presbyterian Church and a former longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Cass City. As a member she served on the Memorial Committee, Ladies Auxiliary, and Bach Festival Committee. Nelle was an avid golfer, swimmer, snow skier and marksman. She was a former YMCA Camp Maqua Counselor and Girl Scout Leader. She loved playing board games such as Scrabble, Backgammon and Cribbage and enjoyed card games on the computer.
Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children: Janet (Billy) Bruner of Cedar Hill, TX, Susan (Ray) Yerg of Ridgefield, CT, Linda (Steve) Holder of Boise, ID, Nancy (Bob) Poynter of Irving, TX, Donald F. (Alison) Koepfgen of Kekaha, HI; step-children: Larry (Karen) Maharg of Appleton, WI, John (Pam) Maharg of Clinton, OH, Jim (Tom) Maharg of Sherman, CT, Jeffrey Maharg of Ann Arbor; 15 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her siblings: Betty Welsh Stirling, Gail Welsh Davenport, Tom Welsh, Fred Welsh and Bob Welsh; daughter-in-law, Kally Maharg.
Funeral service held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2009 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Rev. David Blackburn of Fraser Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. Honorary pallbearers for Mrs. Maharg: Bobbi Branch, Lindsay Maharg, Cary Yerg, Amanda Yerg, Kristen Maharg, Sherri Sirna, Jennifer Fanning, Josh Voll, Stephen Maharg. Pallbearers are: Don Koepfgen, Larry Maharg, John Maharg, Jeff Maharg, Jon Poynter, Tommy Poynter, Ryan Poynter, and Chris Maharg. Memorials may be made to Kally Maharg Memorial Scholarship, The Challenge Fund through First Presbyterian Church of Cass City or American Red Cross.
