Fred Mackay

LTC (Ret) Fred Mac Kay, 65, of Columbus, GA, formerly of Cass City, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 in Columbus Medical Center, Columbus, GA. He was born August 14, 1941 in Cass City to Robert John and Evelyn Lucille (Kimmel) Mac Kay. He married Ann Meadows November, 1965 in Grace Baptist Church in Lexington KY. She died July, 1995 after 30 years of marriage.

Col. Mac Kay entered the US Army in 1959 initially as a helicopter mechanic and crew-chief on the H21C tandem rotor helicopter. During his assignment to Ft. Belvoir, VA (61-64), in support of the Military District of Washington he met his future wife (1962) Ann Meadows of Lexington, KY. In 1964 he attended infantry OCS and received his commission in September 1964. He served 2 tours with the 1st Inf Division in the Vietnam conflict, serving as: Platoon leader, Company Executive Officer, Company Commander and as a Division G-3 Operations Officer. His awards and decorations include the: Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Hcptr crew chief wings, the Legion of Merit, Soldiers Medal, Bronze star w/V device-6 awards, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 3 awards, Army Commendation Medal 5 awards, Good Conduct Medal, NDSM, and the Vietnam Service Medal w/8 campaign stars. He retired from the Army in 1987 having served 28 years in a variety of installations located in the states and abroad. He held multiple degrees from Troy State University, obtaining them both in and out of service.

Col. Mac Kay was a member and deacon of Hilton Terrace Baptist Church for many years in addition, he has served in other various assignments within the church. He was an active member of the Columbus branch of the Gideons International having served as the camp Secretary for four years. Currently he is a registered Life member of: The Gideons International, Cass City VFW Post #3644 and Society of the 1st Infantry Division.

Col. Mac Kay is survived by his daughter, Tina Louise (Buddy) McLendon of Ringgold, GA; granddaughter, Laura Ashley McLendon of Ringgold, GA; brother, Ralph J. Mac Kay of Novi. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy in 1939; brothers: Donald in 1945, Robert in 2005.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Rev. Dr. Kevin Calhoun of Hilton Terrace Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hilton Terrace Baptist Church.
