Viola M. Hayes Layer, 78, of Caro, died Saturday, October 2, 2010 in her son’s home following a short illness. She was born September 23, 1932 at home in Wisner to Arthur and Mildred (Edgerton) Esckilsen.
Viola worked for Walbro Manufacturing for many years. She later worked for Kroger Grocery Stores in Marlette, Flint and Caro. Viola enjoyed being outside. When she was younger, Viola enjoyed working in her flower gardens, snowmobiling, hunting and camping. She survived Hurricane Rita while living in Louisiana. In the last few years she enjoyed spending time on the deck and watching the deer, turkeys and other wildlife in the yard. Viola was always willing to go for a ride. She liked to travel to visit family and friends.
Viola is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Carolyn Hayes of Caro; grandchildren: Ernest (Tammy) Hayes of Leesville, LA, Phillip (Jennifer) Hayes of Lexington, KY; great grandchildren: S.A. Kenneth “Michael” Hayes, U.S. Navy, Dam Neck, VA, Matthew “Joshua” Hayes; sisters: Esther Guinther of Cass City, Iva Rockwell of Cass City; brothers: Theron (Mabel) Esckilsen of Cass City, Clinton (Joyce) Esckilsen of Nacoma, ND. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Linda M. Hayes; brother, Alvin Esckilsen; sister, Bertha Hahn.
Funeral service held 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Pastor Ronald Wigand of Caro First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Cass City VFW Post #3644 or American Cancer Society.
