TIMOTHY D. KNIGHT,
63, died Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at his home in East Lansing following a two year battle with cancer. He was born April 9, 1949 to David and Dorothy (Eaton) Knight in Cass City. He attended Cass City schools graduating in 1967.
Tim was very active in the community. He played piano, organ and trombone. He was student director of the high school band and was salutatorian of his graduating class. Tim provided music for churches, funerals and weddings. He was chosen Junior Citizen of the Year in 1967. Tim won many honors for his music, extemporaneous speaking and debate.
After graduation from high school, Tim attended Michigan State University. He graduated in 1971 with a degree in psychology. He accepted a position at the university beginning a 40 year career in MSU's Residential and Hospitality Services Division retiring June 29, 2012.
Tim's greatest satisfactions lay in helping residence hall students and their parents navigate the complexities found at a large university and in coaching staff members and student employees to provide exceptional customer service. A consummate people person, Tim enjoyed developing connections across the university so that when a problem was presented, he could pull the right people together to solve it.
Tim served on the Board of Directors of the East Lansing Art Festival for 11 years and, in the same spirit of helping his student residents and employees be successful, he helped develop the Emerging Artist Program that rewarded and encouraged new artists.
Tim is survived by his mother, Dorothy Knight of Cass City; sister, Susan (Ed) Stoutenburg of Cass City; four nephews: Matt, Nick, Jarod and Jeff; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, David Knight; grandparents and several aunts and uncles.
Tim was laid to rest in the mausoleum at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Okemos. A memorial service held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August, 26, 2012 in Cass City United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. Memorial donations in Tim's memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
