GENEVIEVE “JENNY” MARIE KAPPEN,
92, of Cass City, died following a short illness Friday, June 25, 2010 in Tendercare Nursing Facility, Cass City. She was born June 9, 1918 in Detroit to Dwight and Emiline (Pratt) Cady. She married Francis Sowden in 1936. He died April, 1955. She married J. Lester Kappen February 28, 1959 in Romeo. He died October 23, 1991.

Jenny worked on airplane engines as a Rosie the Riveter for General Motors in Flint during World War II. She worked in Owendale at a seat belt factory and later for AC Spark Plug in Flint. Jenny later worked at the Ben Franklin Store in Cass City and then as a crossing guard for Cass City Schools. She was a member of Cass City United Methodist Church and the Canasta Club. She enjoyed knitting, making hats and mittens for all the family and donating them to churches and other organizations. Jenny also enjoyed watching Detroit Tiger baseball, quilting, playing BINGO and she collected Raggedy Ann dolls. Jenny loved spending time with her family.

Jenny is survived by her children: Clifford (Glenna) Sowden of Yale, Myrtle Rabideau of Cass City, David (Pat) Sowden of Almont, Mary Jane (Jim) Fitzgerald of Houghton Lake, Pat Hixon of Morristown, TN, Susan (Russell) Healy of Cass City; daughters-in-law: Nancy (Bob) Miller of Lapeer, Betsy Sowden of Millington, Gwen Sowden of Colorado; son-in-law, Dale Mellendorf of Cass City; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughters: Nancy Brown, Delores Karr; sons: Donald Sowden, Billy Sowden, Morris Sowden, Marshall Sowden; sons-in-law: Buster Hixon, Dean Rabideau; sisters: Geraldine Pettingale, Priscilla Turner.

Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2010 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Rev. Jackie Roe of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mrs. Kappen will be her six great grandsons: Jeff Piaskowski, Chad Mellendorf, Shane Mellendorf, Cole Mellendorf, Jacob Piaskowski, and Dalton Mellendorf.
