Douglas J. Howell, 73, of Cass City, died following a long illness, Friday, March 1, 2013 in his home. He was born December 1, 1939 in Cass City to Grant and Jessie (Allison) Howell. He married Nancy Lou McComb October 10, 1959 in Caro.
Doug attended Cass City Public Schools. He joined the Air Force in 1957 where he was an airplane mechanic. He later worked as a well driller, a business he inherited from his father. In 2009, Doug retired from the DNR after 21 years of service. While employed by the DNR, he worked in the wildlife division tracking wildlife, census counting and planting wildlife vegetation. He also helped build boxes for wood ducks with local boy scouts. Doug loved the outdoors, especially walking in the woods, picking morels, fishing, hunting with his friend Steve and tinkering in his shop. Doug loved a good Western movie, especially those featuring John Wayne. All of his grandchildren were special to him, but he loved spending time with his great grandson and buddy, Joey.
Doug is survived by his wife, Nancy; children: Louise Ponder of Cass City, Grant Howell of Cass City, Robert (Mary) Howell of Caro, Becky Dibble of Cass City, Doug Howell, Jr. of Caro, Mike Howell of St. Charles; 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; brother, Robert Howell of Niceville, FL; sisters: Mona (Keith) Emerson of Livonia, Judy (Bill) Bryden of Falls Church, VA, Janice Swenny of Vacaville, CA; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: William and John; sister, Peg.
Funeral service held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Bishop James Fader of New Hope Ministries officiating. Interment is in Ellington Township Cemetery. Family and friends may share memories, prayers and stories with the family at www.kranzfuneralhome.com.
