GERALD LLOYD HICKS,
87, of Deford died following a long illness Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in his home with his loving family by his side. He was born March 27, 1925 in Cass City to Archie Lloyd and Gladys Rose (Coller) Hicks. He married Elsie Tousley May 18, 1946 in Elsie's parents home in Deford.
Gerald graduated from Cass City High School in 1942. He attended Michigan State College. Gerald lived and worked on the family centennial farm for his entire lifetime. The family farm began in 1899. Gerald served on the school boards of Crawford, Deford and Cass City schools for a total of 16 years. He served on the Deford local M.M.P.A. board and the state committees on resolutions. He served as the County Farm Bureau Board President. Gerald was the Honor Person of the year and along with Elsie were the Tuscola County Honor couple of the year. He was the Tuscola County Discussion Leader of Farm Bureau Community Group "Country Hicks".
Gerald served on the Tuscola County Soil Conservation Board for 25 years. He served as the Deford United Methodist Church Treasurer for 52 years. He served on the Bay Shore Camp board of directors and on two committees there. Gerald was one of the founding board members of the Coller Scholarship Foundation. Most important to Gerald throughout his lifetime was his family and music, both instrumental and vocal, particularly Gospel music.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Elsie; children: Eileen (Rick) Pourcho of Birmingham, Linda Gray of Cass City, Fred (Carol) Hicks of Deford; grandchildren: Bradley (Alissa) Gray of Lake Orion, Jennifer (Joel) Brown of Montgomery, AL, Brian (Melissa) Hicks of Deford, Andrew (Kimberly) Gray of Cass City, Rebecca (Scott) Riggs of Berkley, Kristy (Bradley) Speirs of Cass City; great grandchildren: Emma, Julian, Spencer, Clara, Gabriel, Jonathan, Ethan, Kendall, Madelyn, Kalee, Kacee, Lucas, Elise, Emily and Ethan. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Hicks; son-in-law, Phil Gray.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2012 in Novesta Church of Christ with Brad Speirs and Rev. Kenneth Tousley officiating. Interment is in Novesta Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Hicks: Brad Gray, Andy Gray, Brian Hicks, Scott Riggs, Fred Hicks, Brad Speirs. Memorials may be made to Bay Shore Camp.
