Paul Heckroth

August 3, 1920 — July 24, 2009

Paul W. Heckroth, 88, of Deford, died Friday, July 24, 2009 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Saginaw. He was born August 3, 1920 on the family farm in Unionville to William R. and Amelia (Heck) Heckroth. He married Donna Claire Webb in 1945 in Chicago. She died November 3, 1995.

Paul was an organic crop farmer. He was one of the first to introduce soy beans to the area. Paul served in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving on LST ships #387 and #137. He was a First Class Head Electrician. Paul’s ship was torpedoed during the war causing the death of many of his friends. After the service Paul taught an electrical class in Chicago. He worked at the Defoe Shipyard in Bay City then Active Homes in Marlette. Paul was very patriotic and loyal. He loved the USA and the military that protects it. In the last few years he loved to get out of the house. Trips to Caro and Sandusky, visiting many area businesses, were a great treat for him. Paul enjoyed gardening.

Paul is survived by his children: Timothy A. (Vicky) Heckroth of Spencer, IA, Jan (Jeff) Tuckey of Cass City, Randall D. (Shelley) Heckroth of Caro, Karen (Matthew) Cooper of Wichita, KS, Daniel (Heather) Heckroth of Sebewaing, Ronald T. (Raine) Heckroth of Clarkston, Paula M. (John) Walker of Cass City; 23 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Clayton “Bud” (Mary) Heckroth of Unionville. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Ann Stokes; grandson, Christopher Heckroth; brother, Cletus Heckroth.

Funeral service held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009 in Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with Pastor David Cooper of Deford Community Church officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Military honors under the direction of Cass City VFW Post #3644 and the U.S. Navy. Memorials may be made to Family Discretionary Fund.
