DONALD WARD HANBY,
75, of Cass City, died following a short illness Monday, February 1, 2010 in his home with his family by his side. He was born September 19, 1934 in Cass City to Ralph Duncan “R.D.” and Lillian Fern (Ward) Hanby. He married Barbara Jeanne Gordon December 1, 1956 in Cass City.
Donald served in the U.S. Army stationed in France from 1954 until 1956. He worked for the State of Michigan at Caro Regional Center as a maintenance mechanic retiring after over 34 years. Don was a member of Cass City First Baptist Church, where he served as custodian, and was a member of the State Employee Retirees Association. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and watching sports, especially basketball. Don particularly loved watching high school sports especially when his grandchildren were playing.
Don is survived by his wife, Barbara; children: Sharon (Toby) Todd of Oak Hill, OH, James (Rita) Hanby of Cass City, Jeff (Michelle) Hanby of Cass City, Lori (Randy) Patera of Cass City, Greg (Kristi) Hanby of Saline; grandchildren: Shannon Todd, Wesley (Amy) Todd, Mary Beth (Aaron) Hofner, Eric Hanby, Kurt Hanby, Bradley Hanby, Kyle Hanby, Caleb Hanby, Jacob Hanby, Rachel Patera, Joel Patera, Kendal Hanby, Ian Hanby and Reese Hanby; his first great grandchild is due in April. Don is also survived by his brother, Richard "Dick” (Karen) Hanby of Grand Haven; sister, Mary (Larry) Anners of Sequim, WA; nieces: Kristyn (Dave) Ireland of Grand Haven, Sherry (Jason) Wille of Carmel, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2010 in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Pastor David Hill of Cass City First Baptist Church and Pastor John Wood of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Bay City officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Hanby will be his grandsons: Wesley Todd, Eric Hanby, Kurt Hanby, Bradley Hanby, Kyle Hanby, Caleb Hanby, Jacob Hanby, Joel Patera, and Ian Hanby.
