JOHN GRUBER,
87, formerly of Cass City, died peacefully at the Perry Lutheran Home in Perry, IA September 28, 2018, where he resided for the past year. He was born December 15, 1931 in Hackleburg, AL to Joseph and Susie (McDow) Gruber. He grew up in Cass City, where he married Eula Dewey and raised three sons, William, Michael and Joseph.
He proudly served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War. John worked for Local Union 85 at Dow Chemical in Michigan as a plumber pipe fitter until his retirement. On December 28, 1993John married Velma Cooper Gruber and upon retirement they moved to Dothan, AL until their relocation to Iowa in November 2017. John enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends.
John is survived by his loving wife, Velma; his sons: William (Becky) Gruber of Dothan, AL and Michael (Daureen) Gruber of Jacksonville, FL; step-daughters: Valerie Albrecht, Pam Finestead (Mike) of Granger, IA and Kim (Mike) Low of Orlando, FL; twelve grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eula; six siblings and his youngest son, Joseph.
John will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his kindness and willingness to help anyone in need, and his great love for his family.
A graveside service was held Friday, October 26, 2018 in Elkland Township Cemetery led by his son, Michael Gruber. Military honors under the direction of Cass City VFW Post #3644 and the United States Army. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation.
