GEORGENE “PAT” HELEN WELLS
Georgene “Pat” Wells, 94, of Cass City died Sunday, September 22, 2024 in The Heartlands Senior Living Community in Marlette. She was born September 14, 1930 in Cass City to Henry and Ruth (Leeson) Tate. She married Clyde Eugene Wells on August 3, 1951 in First Baptist Church of Cass City. He died May 28, 2019.
Pat started working at age eleven for her father in his grocery store, Tate’s Grocery Store. She attended Cass City High School, during which time she was a cheerleader. Pat graduated in 1948. She attended Grand Rapids Baptist Bible Institute, now known as Cornerstone University. Together, Pat and Clyde worked at Youth Haven’s Boy’s Home in Muskegon for three years until it closed. Later in life, she was employed by Kritzman’s Clothing store, as a salesperson, for over thirty years. Pat was an active member of the community and accrued over eight thousand, six hundred volunteer hours for Hills & Dales Hospital Auxiliary of Cass City. Her hobbies included knitting nylon “scrubbies” for cleaning dishes, cross stitching, bowling, and reading.
Pat and Clyde were great fans and supporters of the Cass City Red Hawks. They supplied and laundered towels for both boys and girls Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball teams, kept records of the games, and handed out water bottles. Their compassion for children extended to their home, where they were always very hospitable to the youth of the neighborhood. Pat actively attended First Baptist Church of Cass City and loved spending time with its members, especially the young ones. She had a talent for writing poems and wrote many for special occasions such as weddings and graduations. Her grandchildren will never forget a mandatory Phase 10 game when visiting.
Pat is survived by her children: Steven (Charla) Wells of Riviera Beach, FL; Sandy Sherman of Cass City; Sheryl (Jeff) Parker of Colorado Springs, CO; Sharon (Rob) Groenewold of Holland; grandchildren: Micaiah (Sandi) Wells, Jobeth (Bill) Syers, Nate Sherman, James (Carla) Parker, Chase (Kelly) Parker, Courtney (David) Knewtson, Kaylee (Tyler) Flieman, Brittney (Quinten) Steenwyk, Garrett Groenewold; great-grandchildren: Carter Meinert, Brennon Syers, Dustin Syers, Luke Parker, Noah Parker, Brooke Parker, Elliot Flieman; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; infant grandchildren: Gabriella Wells, Jedidiah Wells; brother, Raymond Tate; sister, Jean Martin.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 3, 2024 in First Baptist Church of Cass City with Pastor Christian Wright and family friend, Ty Perry co-officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Pat will be: Micaiah Wells, Nate Sherman, James Parker, Chase Parker, Garrett Groenewold, Carter Meinert. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Elevator Fund.
