EVELYN MARIE WHITTAKER
Evelyn M. Whittaker, 84, of Cass City, passed away following a lengthy illness into the loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 in The Heartlands of Marlette. She was born April 9, 1940 in Petoskey to Rev. Lewis Leland and Edith Lillian (Kitchin) Surbrook. She married Wayne M. Whittaker on October 10, 1959 in Mizpah Missionary Church of Cass City.
Evelyn graduated from Cass City High School in 1958 and attended Bethel College for one year. She worked as a payroll clerk for Marlette Homes for some time. Later, Evelyn returned to work as an office manager for Cass City Livestock for over thirty years. For over fifty years, she served as the deputy treasurer for Evergreen Township. Evelyn was proud of the home that she and Wayne built together. She was a dedicated, hard worker while helping him on their farm. Evelyn enjoyed knitting and quilting; making afghans and numerous quilts that she gave to her children, grandchildren, and many others to enjoy. A member of the Cass City Missionary Church, Evelyn acted as the treasurer for many years and also taught Sunday School for over forty years. In her spare time, she enjoyed bird watching and was a truly amazing cook. Most importantly, Evelyn was always known as a devoted Christian, and a loving wife and mother who was always there for her family.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Wayne, of Cass City; daughters: Linda (Glenn) Miller Jr. of Cass City, Rita (Jim) Hanby of Cass City, Lori (Tim) Crothers of Sarasota, FL; son, Dean (Sandi) Whittaker of Rockford; eleven grandchildren: Eric (Susan) Hanby, Kurt (Ashleigh) Hanby, Bradley (Sarah) Hanby, Kyle (Jessica) Hanby, Emily (Tim) Hodapp, Ben (Brittany) Crothers, Jake (Katelyn) Crothers, Olivia (Ben) Hoffmeister, Jason Whittaker, Claire Whittaker, Elise Whittaker; fourteen great grandchildren; brother, Rev. Mark (Linda) Surbrook of El Dorado Springs, MO; sister, Sharyn (Gary) Robinson of Overland Park, KS; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her infant brother, Dean Surbrook; sisters: Lois Sugden, Eleanor Dietzel; brother, Ray Surbrook.
Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025 in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Pastor Paul Gaymon of United Hospice Services officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Brown City Camp or Gideon’s International.
