LAWRENCE ARTHUR ENGLEHART,
85, of Deford died Sunday, December 26, 2010 in United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center following a long illness. He was born April 6, 1925 at home in Deford to Arthur and Lilli (Hill) Englehart. He came home from Germany with and married his sweetheart, Elfriede Anna Bess January 26, 1948 in the Novesta Church of Christ Parsonage.
Lawrence served as Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was a motor pool mechanic. After his return to the U.S. he worked for General Motors at the Chevrolet Gear and Axle plant in Hamtramck as a Journeyman Mechanic retiring as Lead Mechanic in 1980 after 30 years. Lawrence was a lifelong member of Novesta Church of Christ where he served on various committees and as Usher. He was a member of Cass City VFW Post #3644 since 1989 where he served as Commander in 1990-1991 and served as Chaplain for several years. Lawrence was also a member of Pheasants Forever. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting. Lawrence loved being outside working with his tractor, working in his garden or working in the garage. He was past president and member of the Old Settlers Group, a group of original settlers of the Deford and Novesta Township area.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Elfriede; sons: Lawrence Englehart of Vermontville, Ronald (Catherine) Englehart of Rochester Hills, Kevin Englehart of Royal Oak; grandchildren: Erin (Matt) Welker, Ben Englehart, Will Englehart, Andrew (Sarah) Englehart, Audrey Englehart, James Englehart; great grandchildren: Zachary, Lilah, Ella and Ryan. Lawrence is also survived by many nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Elmer Hallitt; Ludwig (Karin) Bess. Lawrence is preceded in death by his infant children: Gerald Arthur Englehart and Johanna Ruth Englehart; his parents, Arthur and Lilli Englehart; daughter-in-law, Christine Englehart; siblings and their spouses: Frank (Violet) Englehart, Irene Hallitt, Helen (Charles) Layman, Albert (Eunice) Englehart, Ralph Englehart (who was killed in World War II), Gordon (Christine) Englehart; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Ludwig and Johanna Bess; sister-in-law, Kathe Maier; brothers-in-law: Hans Bess, Kurt Bess.
Funeral service held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 in Novesta Church of Christ with Brad Gniewek of Novesta Church of Christ and Chuck Emmert of Duplain Church of Christ officiating. Interment in Novesta Township Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Englehart: Duane Englehart, Ben Englehart, Will Englehart, Andrew Englehart, James Englehart and Matt Welker.
