DR. CHARLES “CHUCK” FRANKLIN REED
Dr. Charles F. Reed, 72, of Cass City, died Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was born November 14, 1950 in Hamilton, Ohio to Francis “Red” and Gertrude (Faust) Reed. He married Dr. Susan Hoppe on March 14, 1987 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Chuck attended Ohio State University and ran with their track team. He graduated in 1977 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. After graduating college, Chuck worked in large animal veterinary medicine both in Ohio and Michigan; primarily herd health, especially dairy herds. He moved to Cass City in 1996 where he worked mostly with dairy herds, as a sole practitioner. Toward the end of his career, Chuck worked mainly with goats and part time at a non-profit, small animal clinic All About Animals Rescue in Flint, Michigan. He enjoyed caring for all types of animals throughout his career, especially goats.
Chuck was fond of reading, especially books on military history and had an extensive knowledge of the topic. He enjoyed watching his children, from childhood through high school, as they played soccer, basketball, track, tennis, volleyball, and later in life, his daughter as she ran road and trail races. Chuck coached AYSO Soccer for many years in Cass City. He was also the coach of the Cass City High School Varsity boy’s and girl’s soccer teams.
Chuck collected lighthouses and military vehicle models. Going into thrift stores to see what things he could find to add to his collections and his Christmas village was an ideal pastime. Chuck’s favorite place to visit was Mackinac Island, where he would go yearly. He also enjoyed time spent in The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio; as well as, various forts and other museums.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Dr. Susan Hoppe of Cass City; his son, Eric Reed of Alpena; his daughters: Dr. Sarah (Jarret) Nelson of Cadillac; Caitlin Reed and her significant other Nick Gerber of Richland. He is preceded in his death by his parents, Red and Gertrude Reed, his in-laws John and Eileen Krug, and brother-in-law, Chris Hoppe.
