KATHLEEN JEWELL CONRAD
91, of Merritt Island, FL, formerly of Deford, died Wednesday, August 11, 2021 in Vitas Healthcare, Rockledge, FL. She was born July 8, 1930 in Cove Gap, WV to Minard and Myrtle (Atkins) Elliott. She married Edgar “Slim” Conrad on January 23, 1964 in Detroit. He died January 25, 1994.
Kathleen kept active shooting pool and bowling until well in her seventies. She played on many leagues, was always competitive, and earned numerous trophies to prove it. Kathleen was a member of the Kingston VFW, then the Mayville VFW, and a life member of the Moose Lodge in Melvindale, then Caro. She enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, word find and reading, sometimes reading an entire book in one evening. The most important thing to Kathleen was her family. She would rally enough strength to see her through, knowing the grandkids were coming to visit or if she was going to a family reunion. Kathleen delighted in feeding her family. She loved to cook and share her recipes. Kathleen crocheted Christmas tree skirts for her grandchildren. She crafted baby blankets for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren when she could. Kathleen was grateful for her children and never wanted to be a burden. She tried to do whatever she could for herself. She loved life itself and was able to enjoy the beach just three weeks before she left us. Kathleen enjoyed singing old gospel hymns. The day before she died, she heard Charleen singing “When the Roll is called up Yonder I’ll be There” and chimed in as clear as the day, even though she was not able to speak much.
Kathleen is survived by her children: Orville (Mary) Maynard of Merritt Island, FL; Charleen (James) Watros of Merritt Island, FL; Beth Annette (Ed) Nichol of Merritt Island, FL; grandchildren: Timothy (Sheri) Broyles, Pamela (William) Johnson, John (Heather Jones) Broyles, Sara (Terence Blakely) Keys, Charles Maynard, Donna (Ken Bourgeois) Broughton, Brian (Sumanna) Maynard, James-Rick (Tasha) Nichol, Anjanette (Doug) Swift, Keith (Charise) Tackett, Michael Maynard, Andrew (Sara) Watros, Heather (David) Timmons, Amanda Maynard; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; brother, Gene (Sallie) Elliot of Merritt Island, FL; nieces and nephews: Bobbie (Bill) Thomas, Gene (Grace) Elliott, Dennis (Vickie) Chandler; son Roger Maynard’s special friend: Lisa Sanders and her daughter, Meghann Sanders.
