VELMA SUSAN CLELAND
Velma S. Cleland, 96, of rural Cass City, died Wednesday, September 20, 2017 in Huron County Medical Care Facility following a lengthy illness. She was born February 12, 1921 at home in Sanilac County to Benjamin and Amy (Moore) Bailey. She married Curtis J. Cleland November 6, 1937 in the parsonage in Sandusky. He died June 18, 1996.
Velma was a lifelong member of Community of Christ Church in Shabbona. She was a member of Michigan State Extension for many years serving as a nutrition aide for a short time. She enjoyed oil painting, flower gardening and reading. She loved animals especially her cats and dogs. Velma served on the Friends of the Library group for Rawson Memorial Library for many years. She was a big supporter of the Huron County Baby Pantry in Bad Axe.
Velma is survived by her children: Eugene (Winnie) Cleland of Bad Axe, Judy (Jim) Doerr of Ubly, Curtis "Jerry" (Theo) Cleland of Cass City; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; many great great grandchildren; extended family includes foster children: Judy Ann (Steve) Hosner of AL, Linda (Rick) Kukuk of Brown City, Mary Lapeer of Deckerville, Denise (Michael) Stine of Cass City and their families; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her great grandson, Curtis Lee Doerr; brothers: Vern Bailey, Leslie Bailey, Shirley Bailey, Kenneth Bailey; sisters, Irene Kippen, Evelyn Kohl.
Memorial service held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2017 in Community of Christ Church of Shabbona with her grandson, Dale Cleland officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Ubly.
