Joyce Lavonne Cameron (Smeckert)

JOYCE LAVONNE CAMERON,
87, of Cass City, died following a lengthy illness Monday, April 6, 2020 in United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center, Marlette. She was born August 13, 1932 at home in Snover to Gordon Benjamin and Grace Anne (Blank) Smeckert. She married Russell Cameron April 14, 1962. He died November 10, 1984.
Joyce graduated from Sandusky High School and received a degree in teaching from Asbury College, Kentucky. She taught two semesters in Cuba and also in Michigan before she was married. Joyce taught in the country school and worked with special needs children. She also helped Russell on their crop and dairy farm.

Joyce was an active member of the Women Christian Temperance Union for over forty years and volunteered with United Hospice of Marlette for ten years. After Russell died, she traveled all over the world including China, Australia and Israel which was her favorite. Joyce researched her family history and genealogy while visiting Germany. She spent the winter months in Arizona and Florida. Joyce enjoyed estate and garage sales with good friend Kathy Hale. A member of Deford Community Church and its Diamond’s Class, Joyce always looked forward to Pastor Cooper singing to her when he would visit. She loved reading her Bible and spent much time praying for family and friends.

Joyce is survived by her sons: Robert (Wendy) Cameron of Decker; Kenneth (Darlene) Cameron of Decker; grandchildren: Bobbi, Whitney, Jeremy; great grandchildren: Alisa, Jamie; sisters-in-law: Doris Smeckert, Grace Cameron; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Russell; brother, Leland Smeckert; sister, Helen (Glenn) Stevenson; brother-in-law, Max Cameron.
Private family funeral service held Thursday, April 9, 2020 in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Pastor David Cooper of Deford Community Church officiating. A public service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Moore Township Cemetery, Snover. Memorials may be made to Deford Community Church or to Jorge and Laura Vaca (World Gospel Mission).
