Irveline Benfield

Irveline D. Benfield, 89, of Saginaw, formerly of Kingston, died Monday, September 15, 2003, in Deckerville Community Hospital, Deckerville. She was born May 28, 1914 in Detroit to Morgan LeRoy and Ida Elizabeth (Budd) Steele. She married Arthur D. Benfield on January 18, 1936. He died December 13, 1980.

Irveline was a teacher, learning the Palmer Method of Business Writing February, 1934. She attended Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, graduating in August, 1958. Irveline received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Eastern Michigan University July 31, 1959. She attended Syracuse University leaving November 28, 1962. She received her Master of Arts degree in Education at Eastern Michigan University, graduating July 31, 1964. Mrs. Benfield taught in rural schools, including Freibringer Elementary School, Handley School, East Dayton School and George School, before teaching kindergarten four years in Kingston. She retired May 27, 1975, after working 18 years in the City of Saginaw’s school district teaching Special Education. Irveline was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma and the First Congregational Church of Saginaw. She was a former member of the Kingston United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing and doll making.

Iveline is survived by her daughters: Geraldine Jefsen of Marlette, Louise (Herbert) Parker of Applegate; 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren; sisters: Sarah (Oran) Dorsett of CA, Christine Plane of Caro, Adelaide Plane of Kingston; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son, William and brother, LeRoy “Morgan” Steele.

Funeral services held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 19, 2003 at Kranz Funeral Home, Kingston, with Rev. Terry Butters of Kingston United Methodist Church officiating. Interment is in Kingston Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mrs. Benfield: Jess Jefsen, Scott Jefsen, Ronnie Benfield, Jim Benfield, Craig Long, Gary Bachschmidt, Glen Chappel and Dan Zissler. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Visitation: 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2003 in Kranz Funeral Home, Kingston
